Artisan Saturday at Explore Park

This is the underpainting for a dog portrait I will be working on tomorrow Saturday June 10th at Explore Park. Come by and visit from 10-3 for the first of three Artisan Saturdays. It is going to be great weather to hike, explore, meet crafters, artists, musicians and eat great food.

Tribute to Roger Bansemer 12 x 16 oil NFS

After painting on location and from imagination, sometimes it is good to find artists that you admire and emulate their styles and colors in order to learn from the masters. I really admire Roger Bansemer for his down home images and rich colors. As I continue to work on my Parkway Series I take time out to look at his work and the work of Julian Merrow-Smith whose plein air paintings I love for their space, perspective and brushwork. New ideas, new beginnings, the new year become exciting with anticipation of new paintings!

Explore Park Artisan Days

Saturday is going to be a beautiful day to enjoy Artisan Days at Explore Park. Art demos, music, crafts, book sales, Christmas presents, hiking, dancing, food and more!! I will be painting and selling my newly illustrated Christian Nature series children's book "The Weeping Tree". Come by and visit from 10-3 at mile post 114 off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Brughs Tavern

Two small paintings of Brughs Tavern (bottom photo) were begun yesterday at Explore Park. We had great weather until about two in the afternoon when a thunderstorm put a stop to our fun! I still need to finish them up but plein air painting captures the moment in time with such immediacy - fun but challenging.....

Treatise on why I create

An artist, musician, craftsman, theatrical director, performer, all know that the human heart longs for truth, goodness, and beauty. If we can create that sense of longing, we capture our audience in the creative experience. In Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz, Frank creates a magical story about longing for home. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is a plea by a young girl to find that place of rest, a home in which to feel safe. St. Augustine said "our hearts are restless until we find our rest in God". Ennio Morricone, the Italian composer, expressed his faith through his music. He sat before a painting of Jesus every day and prayed for an hour before beginning his day. His composition "The Mission" transports the listener to another place, another time, another dimension of reality - an eternal home- a celebration of beauty. My goal in painting is to draw the viewer into a higher sense of reality and to feel that sense of longing and to hopefully realize that longing is ultimately for the eternal home, Heaven.
