Along the Banks of the James

This painting and the next five are a diversion from my Parkway series.  Sometimes I am asked to take a break from my beloved mountains and to paint a series of landscapes in other parts of the country.  These paintings are of our state capital, Richmond, Virginia from the James River.  In the hustle and bustle of every day life, downtown businesses and their patrons forget that there is another world surrounding them.  Bringing the beauty and peace into a high rise bank was the objective of this client who knows well  the effect of paintings on interior design and even more so, the well being of those who work and visit within the interior space.

 

Bridging the James

I have found these bridges to be named and renamed so I am not really sure what I am looking at.  North Bank Trail Head, Buttermilk Loop trail, Pedestrian Only bridge, Robert E. Lee bridge and Porterfield Tyler Memorial bridge.  If anyone can help me, I would appreciated info.!!!

This iconic concrete bridge was built in 1919.  It is the oldest bridge over the James in Richmond and it is a railroad crossing for trains going north and south.  As I continue the Richmond series I am finding  the "sense of place" usually involves a bridge.

The historical James River runs through our State Capital.  Even in the hustle and bustle of city life the reminder of Life giving water and Peace remains faithful to us who take the time to admire the Beauty and the Majesty of the Creator of all things Beautiful!  This is a new series for a client who recognizes the importance of surrounding ourselves with Beauty.
 

Blaze of Fire

On my way to the Peaks, the autumn colors change the world into a blaze of fire.  It is so exciting to experience the seasons in Virginia.  I cannot imagine living in a place that never enjoys the summer, fall winter, spring  of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I could paint the same place a thousand times and the time of day, the day of the month, the weather conditions, the temperature, the humidity....all would change the painting.  When I finish the 369 miles, I may start over and try this idea!!   

The Coming Storm

The drama of a summer thunder storm approaching over the mountains always fills the senses with smells, sounds and sights that are memorable.  As a young child, I remember my senses filling with anticipation of the coming storm.  It was never a sense of fear but always a sense of something important happening, something awesome, fierce, and powerful.  The calm before the storm helped me to remember who controls the weather and that peace in Him is so comforting today as we all face the storms ahead.

Shalom Peace

Peace, rest, Shalom, rejuvenate, think, meditate, restore, redeem, rejoice...... words that come to mind when I block out the world, the chaos, the confusion.  Illustrating, capturing, painting these concepts are formost in mind when I look for subject matter along the Parkway.  What a blessing to have this natural resource in our backyard.
 

After the Rain

When the skies clear after the rain, the golden light, the smell of wet grass, reflections in puddles all announce the life giving Glory of creation!  If I can capture a small shadow of this Glory in my paintings, I will be a happy artist.  Maybe one day in heaven I will be assigned the task of painting the real Glory of Creation!!

From Everlasting to Everlasting

I cannot believe it has been a year since I posted a painting online.  Covid has changed many lives.  Thankfully my family has endured. Several members have recovered and my grandchildren have persevered through my teaching them at home.  Now as I  return to the paint brushes and canvases, I see that the never changing mountains are still my "go to" for inspiration!  Psalm 90:2
